Starry Field x KCCEB KCCEB is delighted to welcome acclaimed writer Margaret Juhae Lee and visionary artist Dave Young Kim to discuss Margaret's new memoir, Starry Field: A Memoir of Lost History.
In this epic memoir, Margaret weaves together investigative journalism, oral history, and archival research to reveal the truth about her family against the backdrop of Korea’s tumultuous modern history. As a young girl growing up in Houston, Margaret never heard about her grandfather, Lee Chul Ha. His story was guarded by Margaret’s grandmother, who was left widowed in 1936 with two young sons. To his surviving family, Lee Chul Ha was a criminal, and Margaret was determined to uncover the truth. What she found is that her grandfather was not a source of shame; he was a student revolutionary imprisoned for protesting the Japanese government’s colonization of Korea. Through Margaret’s relentless efforts, he was honored as a Patriot of South Korea almost 60 years after his death.
